This is a short reading, echoed in German and/or French.  It is suggested that there are different readers, one for each language.  This is not about the understanding of the words, although the reader needs to have a feel for the sound of the language – rather it is about the poetry and the mystery of creation, which is revealed more easily in unfamiliar language, as we allow it to wash over us.  If practical, the room could start in darkness, with a candle lit, or the lights turned on, as God says “Let there be light”.  If used at the start of an Advent or Christmas carol service, it could be followed immediately and unannounced by a choir or soloist singing the first verse of either “O come, o come Emmanuel” or “O come, all ye faithful”, perhaps processing with candles, and with everyone joining in for later verses, or else with the singing of “The light of Christ”.

In the beginning, God

     Im Anfang, Gott 

          Au commencement, Dieu

 

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.  Now the earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep, and the Spirit of God hovered over the waters.

     Im Anfang schuf Gott Himmel und Erde. Und die Erde war wüst und leer, und es war finster auf der Tiefe; und der Geist              Gottes schwebte auf dem Wasser.

          Au commencement, Dieu créa les cieux et la terre. La terre était informe et vide: l’obscurité couvrait la surface de l`abîme,           et l`esprit de Dieu planait au-dessus des eaux.

 

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.

     Im Anfang war das Wort, und das Wort war bei Gott, und das Wort war Gott. Dasselbe war am Anfang bei Gott.

          Au commencement était la Parole, et la Parole était avec Dieu, et la Parole était Dieu. Elle était au commencement avec               Dieu.

 

And God said, “Let there be light!”  And there was light.  God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.

     Und Gott sprach: Es werde Licht! und es ward Licht. Und Gott sah, daß das Licht gut war. Da schied Gott das Licht von der        Finsternis.

          Dieu dit: Que la lumière soit! Et la lumière fut. Dieu vit que la lumière était bonne; et Dieu sépara la lumière d`avec                     l’obscurité.

 

Through him all things were made; without him, nothing was made that has been made.  In him was light, and that light was the light of men.  The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

     Alles ward durch ihn gemacht, und ohne dasselbe war nichts gemacht, was gemacht ist. In ihm war das Leben, und das            Leben war das Licht der Menschen. Und das Licht scheint in der Finsternis, und die Finsternis hat es nicht begriffen.

          Toutes choses ont été faites par elle, et rien de ce qui existe n`a été fait sans elle. En elle était la vie, et la vie était la                   lumière des hommes. La lumière luit dans l’obscurité, et l’obscurité ne l`a point vaincue.

 

There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John.  He came as a witness to testify concerning that light.  He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.  The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.

     Da war ein Mensch, von Gott gesandt, sein Name Johannes. Dieser kam zum Zeugnis, daß er von dem Licht zeugte, damit        alle durch ihn glaubten. Er war nicht das Licht, sondern daß er zeugte von dem Licht. Das war das wahrhaftige Licht, welches      alle Menschen erleuchtet, die in diese Welt kommen.

          Il y eut un homme envoyé de Dieu, appelé Jean. Il vint pour servir de témoin, pour rendre témoignage à la lumière, afin               que tous crussent par lui. Il n`était pas la lumière, mais il parut pour rendre témoignage à la lumière. Cette lumière était la           véritable lumière, qui, en venant dans le monde, éclaire tout homme.
